ACTS 2 GROUPS

God did not design us to lead lives of isolation, but instead we are to be vitally connected with Him, and with one another. At University, we want to be a place where people make meaningful, lasting connections. The primary way people connect with each other and get “plugged in” to the church is through our Acts 2 Group ministry.

Acts 2 Groups — Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Acts 2 group?

An Acts 2 group is a gathering of approximately 10−12 people who meet together regularly for fellowship, Bible study and prayer. Acts 2 groups were created in order to connect people to one another and to the life of University Church while helping them apply basic biblical principles to their everyday life. We like to refer to this process as "experiencing life together."

What do you mean “experience life together”?

The weekly Acts 2 group gatherings are only one part of what it means to be a part of an Acts 2 group. To experience life together requires that individuals make their relationship with other group members a priority. This consists of a willingness to care for one another and to enjoy fellowship outside of group meeting times.

Are all groups the same?

No. At University, we have all kinds of groups because we have all kinds of people. We have groups for married couples, empty nesters, newlyweds, singles, etc. In addition, we would like to begin to have groups such as Celebrate Recovery and DivorceCare that will exist to minister to specific needs and hurts. Regardless of your situation, we want to help you find the gift of friends at University with whom you can enjoy and experience the Christian life.

Why should I join an Acts 2 group?

Here are four very important reasons. First, you’ll begin to feel like you’re part of the University family and

not just a face in the crowd. Second, you’ll immediately be surrounded by people who will provide a caring network of love and support. Third, you’ll begin to understand the Bible better as you study the scriptures with others. Finally, you’ll discover the joy of experiencing life with genuine friends who accept you for who you are and for who you are becoming.

Do I have to be a member of University to join an Acts 2 group?

Acts 2 groups are open to both attendees and members alike. (Membership is required to lead a group.)

How often do Acts 2 groups meet?

The actual day and time of our meetings are determined by each individual group. Currently, the majority of our groups meet on Sunday evening.

How long does a typical Acts 2 group stay together?

We do not force groups to multiply at a predetermined time. However, we do encourage all groups to help expand the Acts 2 Group Ministry by training new leaders who can eventually launch a new group. It is not uncommon for groups to be together for 12-18 months before helping to launch a new group.

Where do Acts 2 groups meet?

Most of our groups meet in homes located throughout the Tuscaloosa area.

What happens at an Acts 2 group meeting?

Every group is different, but there are some common denominators. Most groups have a time for fellowship. The central growth component is a study of something very relevant to the members of the group. Our groups are designed to encourage discussion and engage each person in the process. Groups also have the opportunity to pray for one another.

What do groups study?

Group leaders work with the Acts 2 group staff to determine study options. Many groups build discussion around the Sunday morning sermon while others use a small group study. Periodically, the whole church will work through a coordinated series (sermon & Acts 2 groups) together.

Can I start my own group?

We love it when people are interested in leading or hosting a group of their own. If you’d like more information about leading or hosting, please contact Tom at Tom@universitycofc.org.
